Pottery is the ceramic ware made by potters. It also refers to a group of materials that includes earthenware, stoneware, and porcelain. The places where such wares are made are called potteries.

The terms glass, amorphous solid, and non-crystalline solid are synonymous. Although, traditionally, the term glass is reserved for an amorphous solid that has been formed by quenching a glass-forming liquid (or melt) through its glass transition temperature sufficiently quickly that a regular crystal lattice cannot form. Amorphous solids can be formed by methods other than melt quenching, such as ion implantation, and the sol-gel method. Glass in the common sense is still more specific: it contains silica as its main component, and glass former.
